Color a black and white imageIn this tutorial you will learn how to colorize an old black and white photograph in Photoshop.

1. Open your photo, change it's mode to RGB, and make copy of the background layer.

2. We will color different parts of the photo into different colors (of course). Each color will be on a separate layer. That's why you should create a new layer.
3. Staying in the new layer select some part of the portrait, I selected hair. You should stay in the empty new layer.

4. Choose an appropriate color for the hair (a good way to find a suitable color is to pick it with an eyedropper from another photograph), and fill the selection with it.

5. Change blending mode from normal to color.

6. For the color not to be so bright, reduce opacity of the layer.

7. Every other part of the photograph goes through the same procedure. You see below how we color the image section by section.

8. After everything is colored I returned to the eyes. To make them a good color we first eraze the color of the face with a slightly soft erazer.

9. Then we color the irises with black, the eyes get blue color, the whites become white. All go through the same procedure as the others.

The photo is changed now. But with every color on its own layer you can change colors at any time.
